I’m all types of done with the bullshit that spews out of people’s mouths. I love the internet, because it has offered me so much. It’s helped to shape this platform you’re reading this on. It’s given us google for online test answers. It’s given us wikipedia…thank the heavens for wikipedia! Wikipedia and the all nighters writing college papers put together by sheer will, determination and bullshit. And then the internet has also led us to social media. I have a lot to say about social media, but believe it or not, it’s not all negative. This post however, is going to lean more towards the darker side of social media. Let’s get into it.
I think people are spending too much time getting fake offended for the sake of validation. Social media has been a huge contributing factor in this. It’s weird, because I really truly believe that we collectively have decided that we can use this platform to post something and have hundreds of people online validate us. I mean think about it. We post depressing shit and then people come on and tell us that everything will be alright. We post cute pics of our children or significant others and then people get on and like it and validate us, yet again letting us know that this is how things should be. Let me get nerdy for just a sec. There is a literal chemical reaction that takes place when we post shit online. Dopamine is released causing us to take pleasure in all the validation we are getting…again and again.
And, listen. I am not any different. I get that just because I got off Facebook and have an IG account I can’t get myself to post on, I too am part of the problem. Remember kids, I created a whole WEBSITE to get that validation. WE LIKE THE ATTENTION, is my point. I would like to just add that I do believe that I may have a better point than superficiality, but then again that could be the narcissism talking. 😀
Anyways, there’s a point to this and I am straying. I was with someone and they were talking about the hate crime (and let’s keep it honest and call it what it is) committed against Jussie Smollett. Yes, ladies and gents, we are in 20 fuckin’ 19 and *gasp* racism and homophobia exists. Shitty thing to happen. The people who did this need to be held accountable. When I heard about it, my heart dropped, just like when it drops when other not so famous faces deal with this type of homophobia and racism on the daily. (And yes, that was my passive-aggressive way of saying, let’s also continue to be vigilant for news like this when it happens to those like you or me and not just when TMZ is reporting it. I too need to be better at this.) No one should have to go through that. I wish him a quick recovery so that he can keep being the boss that he is and show idiots like those he encountered that the voices of the oppressed will not be silenced.
Now let’s wrap back around to the internet and false validation and narcissism and bullshit. Kevin Hart went online and offered words of support to Jussie. He wanted it to be known that what happened to Smollett was nonsensical and he stands with him. And you know what the internet did? They got so fake offended at things that Kevin Hart said years ago, things, that mind you, Kevin Hart has apologized for. I believe that he means it. I believe that people have the capacity to change, shit, that’s the whole point of this website. Changing perspectives, remember? I don’t get it. People preach about needing change and when a man tries to be different, the world will not let him, because of this facade of being so damn offended. Yo, you are not as angry as you say. I don’t believe you. 🙂 I want to believe in the capacity of humanity to want to change for the better. Why can’t you? Don’t take from the tragic event that has taken place by making it about your feelings getting hurt, which are really not as sensitive as you are making it out to be. This is a time of reflection that humanity has come far, but damn, we got a long ways to go still. On that note, let’s end this here with some words we would all do great to live by, including myself,
“I’d rather not live like there isn’t a God
Than die and find out there really is
Think about it…”
