Homesick Thoughts

I have an absolutely lovely friend who on occasion will share her beautiful words with me. I tell her to keep writing, because she can create magic with her words. Her name is Irma Lizeth Medrano Ramirez, but where the “I” is pronounced as an “E” and the “R” has a soft roll to it, so that the name just rolls off the tongue like soft lilting poetry. There is a certain type of power in addressing someone by their name. I wanted to learn hers and make sure that it passed through my lips as it was meant to. Now it’s time for you to learn hers, because I promise you, it will be one worth reckoning with in the future. Here is a part of her story through her medium of poetry, I give you…

“Home” By Irma Lizeth Medrano Ramirez

“A place only to be visited in my mind
Every once in a while
When I smell that specific aroma
It’s a burning smell – not of destruction
But of comfort
A meal being prepared
On a wild fire
The smell of twigs and branches ablaze
With a whiff of dinner in the air
The color orange pops into my mind’s eye
The scent of wet dirt is a brown tint in my head
Reminds me of the hills and dirt roads
Huts from our humble beginnings
Pastel colored homes filling the streets with life
And the animals live amongst the people to remind us we are all one
Life was but an adventure
Being a kid here was liberating
They didn’t treat you like you were incapable
Your curiosity and initiation was encouraged
How I miss this seldom visited home
My time wasn’t long enough to process the cons of it
I didn’t understand why people would want to leave
However, I didn’t think I would want to
I did eventually comprehend
And I abandoned that place for another
Where they claimed it would be better
They didn’t mention the limitations
Or the separations
And now when I get the feeling of
“I don’t belong” or “I don’t know my roots “
I think of you to bring me a solace peace of what home is
I’m homesick and can’t go back home
This is how it must feel to be alone
I hope one day I can return
To express how much I missed home”

Lizeth if your reading this I feel your words on a deep level. I’m not able to go back home because of not having enough money and really felt like I took for granted where I come from. I related. Appreciate your words and Flames appreciate you for creating this space!
